Alzheimer's disease and brain reserve

Alzheimer's disease has a long early phase in which limited pathological ch anges accumulate without apparent functional consequences. Once pathology e xceeds a certain threshold, clinical features arise, but this threshold see ms to differ from patient to patient, reflecting individual differences in 'brain reserve'. This review discusses the concept and possible determinant s of brain reserve, and their implications for the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease.
