A numerical model for pollutant transport in the atmosphere has been d
eveloped using principal and adjoint equations. Numerical experiments
have been performed to estimate anthropogenic pollution level in diffe
rent areas of the Earth during the selected period (January - February
1986). The account for air mass interaction with Earth's surface was
provided by the model of the atmospheric stratified boundary layer. Th
e calculations were performed using meteorological data from the ECMRW
F (European Center of Medium Range Weather Forecasts) ''TOGA Data Set'
