This article presents a broad review of the field of optical wireless, from
early experiments through to the highperformance systems of today. Emphasi
s is placed on understanding the benefits and limitations of optical wirele
ss, all of which ultimately define the applications. Various systems are ex
amined, each incorporating a different technological solution to suit the p
articular application. Optical wireless technology has matured substantiall
y in recent years and is now capable of delivering important benefits to mo
dern-day telecommunications users.
