Computational methods for modeling complex three-dimensional woven structur
es are reviewed and software tools for automated model construction are des
cribed. The tools make use of image processing, geometric and attribute mod
eling, automated discretization, and efficient solvers. The discretization
techniques control mesh periodicity and volume fraction errors of meshed co
nstituents due to approximation of curved boundaries. Numerical examples fo
r several woven structures are demonstrated in the context of linear elasti
city. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.
