Abstract
The paper analyses properties of the JPEC (Joint Photographic Experts Group ) algorithm used to compress SAR information. Experimental studies of the a pplication of the JPEC algorithm to the compression of holograms and images were performed for real data acquired from aircraft; synthetic aperture ra dar. The statistical characteristics of the errors which arise as a result of the compression (and restoration) of SAR images and holograms are descri bed. These are compared and recommendations for the use of the JPEC algorit hm in compression of SAR information are given.
