We review the application of fluorescence spectroscopy and elastic-sca ttering spectroscopy, over the ultraviolet-to-visible wavelength range , to minimally invasive medical diagnostics. The promises and hopes, a s well as the difficulties, of these developing techniques are discuss ed.
