SPEAKeasy is a successful implementation of a software-defined radio (SDR)
for military applications. It permits general-purpose digital hardware to c
ommunicate over a nide range of frequencies, modulation techniques, data en
coding methods, cryptographic types, and other communication parameters. Th
e background of SDR's for military and commercial needs is discussed? and t
he SPEAKeasy architecture is defined.
