In this paper a full-dynamic theory for elastic dielectrics is presented by
a systematic application of thermomechanical balance laws. Polarization gr
adient, quadrupole polarization and polarization inertia are taken into acc
ount in order for a general theory to be obtained. The constitutive relatio
ns are produced by using the second law of thermodynamics in the form of Cl
ausius-Duhem inequality. In addition, a new formulation of the internal equ
ation of motion is presented and compared with that of previous investigati
ons. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
