This study applied the theory of reasoned action to investigate decisions t
o participate in continuing library education. The goal was to identify the
specific cognitive and affective variables that determined the Southern Oh
io Chapter of the American Society for Information Science (SOASIS) members
' decisions to attend regular SOASIS chapter program meetings. Data from tw
enty-seven subjects were analyzed by multiple regression of intention on th
e predictor variables of attitude and subjective norm, and by correlation o
f direct measures of these predictors of intention with their theoretical d
eterminants. The theory accounted for over 70 percent of the variance in in
tentions to participate. Differences between positive and negative intentio
ns to participate were determined virtually by attitude. Attitude differenc
es were determined by differences in strength of belief concerning outcomes
of participating.
