Abstract
Very high spin (50-60 (h) over bar) states in transitional Dy-156, Er-159 a nd Er-160 nuclei have been studied using the GAMMASPHERE and EUROGAM gamma- ray spectrometers. The lowest energy positive-parity bands in Dy-156 are fo und to evolve smoothly towards an oblate shape in contrast to the sudden ch ange observed in the neighbouring Er-158 nucleus. In Er-159, the decay path of the positive-parity yrast band splits above I-pi = 85/2(+) and favoured multi-particle-hole states are identified in the irregular pattern at 89/2 (+) and 101/2(+). The yrast structure of Er-160 is found to remain collecti ve up to and beyond 50 (h) over bar with no sign of an apparent termination .
