Although stereotypes suggest that aging is associated with dramatic ch
anges in sexuality, a review of relevant literature suggests otherwise
. Although age brings a decline in various aspects of sexual function,
sexual satisfaction typically remains stable in later life. Couples w
ho remain healthy and who place a high value on sexuality can make app
ropriate adjustments to age-related changes. However, sexuality can be
placed at risk by health issues, ageist stereotypes, or lack of flexi
bility. An interdisciplinary approach that explores both medical and p
sychosocial factors in evaluating and treating sexual dysfunction in o
lder adults is essential.
