Abstract
The avalanche dynamics in the Bak-Sneppen mechanism of self-organized criti cality (SOC) is discussed. Rigorous arguments reveal the emergent history d ependence that dominates the intermittent activity. In numerical studies th e emergent SOC state shows glassy features, such as aging and an ultrametri c organization of activity. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reser ved.
