A range of para-substituted aryl-imido complexes [Mo(NAr)(S2CNEt2)(2)Cl-2]
has been prepared upon reaction of [MoO(S2CNEt2)(2)Cl-2] with substituted a
nilines. With diamines similar mononuclear complexes result containing a pe
ndant amino group which is deactivated towards further addition of molybden
um. This is attributed to the significant reduction in basicity of the rema
ining amine functionality upon coordination of the first to the electron-de
ficient molybdenum(VI) centre, and suggests that the two centres communicat
e strongly via the pi-conjugated organic linking group. Diimido-bridged [{M
o(S2CNEt2)Cl-2}(2)(mu-1,5-NC10H6N)] was isolated from the reaction with nap
hthalene-1,5-diamine, while reaction of [MoO2(S2CNEt2)(2)] with para-phenyl
ene diisocyanate afforded [{Mo(S-2)(S2CNEt2)(2)}(2)(mu-p-NC6H4N)]. (C) 1999
