Since its inception in 1956, the President's Council on Physical Fitness an
d Sports (PCPFS) has consistently promoted increased physical activity and
enhanced physical fitness. This paper reviews its original emphasis on yout
h, the inclusion of individuals of all ages, its cooperation with professio
nal organizations, and the changes in its President's Challenge Physical Fi
tness Awards Program. These events have sent different messages to the publ
ic about elements of physical activity and fitness. An evaluation of the cu
rrent President's Challenge has led to recommendations for increased emphas
is on physical activity behavior.
