Sc. Ng et al., Syntheses and characterisation of electrically conductive and fluorescent poly[3-(omega-bromoalkyl)thiophenes], SYNTH METAL, 100(3), 1999, pp. 269-277
A novel series of functionalized polythiophenes incorporating 3-(omega-brom
oalkyl) pendants were synthesized by chemical oxidative polymerization usin
g FeCl3 and characterized using FT-IR, W-Vis absorption spectroscopy, fluor
escence emission spectroscopy, conductivity measurements and thermal analys
es. These polymers attained a maximum electrical conductivity between 4.7 a
nd 8.4 S cm(-1) upon doping with iodine and have a fluorescence quantum yie
ld of up to 11.1% with respect to quinine sulfate. The influence of the ter
minal omega-bromine substituent as of the length of the alkyl pendant on el
ectrical conductivity, spectral behavior and thermal stability is discussed
