Apteropanorpa evansi, sp. n., from the Central Plateau of Tasmania, is desc
ribed and several of its taxonomically useful characters are illustrated. I
t is compared with Apteropanorpa tasmanica Carpenter, the only other specie
s in the family Apteropanorpidae. Some characters used by Carpenter are re
evaluated, and probable generic characters are derived from the description
s of both species. What little is known of the biology and distribution of
the genus is summarised, and convergent similarities in morphology and biol
ogy with the Northern Hemisphere Boreidae are noted. Tasmania probably harb
ours further undescribed Apteropanorpa spp.
