Commercial activated carbon Norit R3-ex was demineralized with concentrated
HF and HCl acids and next heated in an Ar atmosphere at various temperatur
es (950, 1500, 1800 and 2100 degrees C). For all samples adsorption-desorpt
ion isotherms of benzene vapor were determined and X-ray diffraction measur
ements were performed. On the basis of adsorption data porous structure cha
racteristics were evaluated (by using DA, DS, HK and FR equations) and surf
ace areas of meso- and micropores as well as BET surface area were calculat
ed. XRD pattern changes in crystallic structure were obtained. On the basis
of all, these data influence of thermal treatment of activated carbon on i
ts porosity and structure was discussed. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All
