Abstract
This article uses data from the British Household Panel Survey to examine i nequalities in children's environment. fn particular, it examines the relat ionship between income and deprivation. Results show that although income i s a major determinant of deprivation, the two concepts do not overlap entir ely. For example, more than 40 percent of the most deprived children are no t found in the poorest income category. Furthermore, about 15 percent of th e poorest children fare better than average on the deprivation index. Multi variate analysis reveals that household structure accounts partly for the r elatively weak relationship between income and deprivation. Children growin g up with never-married lone mothers appear especially disadvantaged, even after controlling for income.
