Fruit bodies of the wood-rotting North American fungus Hapalopilus mutans p
roduce a mixture of dihydroxybenzoic acids 1, dihydroxybenzoquinones 2 and
a novel type of spirodiones, e.g. mutadione A (4a). All compounds carry lon
g alkyl chains, which may be partially unsaturated. The structures of the m
etabolites were established by spectroscopic methods.
