This paper addresses the loadability of long transmission lines. An advance
d series compensation scheme is presented consisting of a series-connected
voltage-sourced inverter and fixed series-capacitors. This scheme provides
substantial increase of the line loadability beyond that achievable with fi
xed capacitive compensation alone. In addition, it provides smooth power-fl
ow control. Results from simulation studies demonstrate its effectiveness i
n improving the loadability of long transmission lines and providing dampin
g of interarea oscillations.
