INTERACTION BETWEEN P-AMINOPHENOL AND D-CHLORANIL IN SOLID-STATE

p-Aminophenol reacts with p-chloranil in solid state and solution givi ng 1:1 CT complex stabilized by hydrogen bonding. The reaction product obtained by solid state reaction and solution are chemically identica l but structurally different. The reaction product from CH2Cl2 entrape s one mole of CH2Cl2 in its crystal lattice and contains unpaired elec tron. Counter diffusion of the reactant molecules occur during the sol id state reaction and the extent of reaction of p-chloranil at differe nt surfaces of p-aminophenol crystal is different because of its polar character.
