A comparison between two classes of constitutive equations is presented. Th
e comparison is based on two models, namely the classical bi-linear elastop
lastic Von Mises model and an incrementally non linear model previously pro
posed by the authors (called CLoE model). Both models exhibit the same beha
viour for isotropic and deviatoric loading paths. Gudehus' diagram, inversi
bility, second order work and shear band localization criteria are comparat
ively analysed. As a result the two constitutive equations share some simil
arities but the CLoE model gives a more appropriate and flexible descriptio
n of shear band formation. Copyright (C) 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
