The design and realization of high speed (up to 20 Gbit/s) laser-modulator
optical sources is reviewed. The different approaches devised for their mon
olithic integration are described, with particular emphasis on the identica
l active layer (IAL) scheme. Issues pertaining to optimized transmission on
standard dispersive fiber are particularly discussed. Soliton pulse genera
tion by harmonic modulation of these light sources is finally reported.
