Abstract
The advantages and disadvantages of fracture characterization by using either the stress intensity factor (K) or the strain energy release r ate (J) were considered for paper and paperboard. Using the engineerin g criterion for predicting strength of paper products, K is more usefu l, because geometry factors for complicated geometries can be obtained easily. Numerous test data demonstrate predictability. Tenacity, a si mple test based on K, is presented. It is easy to interpret and more p recise than J.
