Abstract
The effect of non-magnetic overlayers on the magnetic anisotropy behaviour of FCC Co(110) epitaxial films are discussed. It is shown that uniaxial mag netic anisotropies are the generic signature of the presence of symmetry br eaking atomic and nm scale structures, e.g. steps, clusters, islands in ult rathin films. Surprisingly, strong changes in anisotropy behaviour occur wi th sub-monolayer depositions of non-magnetic overlayers. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
