Arpad A. Bergh is president of the Optoelectronics Industry Development Ass
ociation (OIDA). He received his BS and MS degrees from the University of S
zeged in Hungary, and Ns PhD in physical chemistry from the University of P
ennsylvania. His career began at Bell Tabs, where he supervised the develop
ment of GaP electroluminescent devices and was promoted to head the compoun
d semiconductor materials development department, responsible for lasers, l
ight-emitting diodes (LEDs), photodetectors and microwave devices. When Bel
lcore was formed in 1984, he became executive director of applied research
program development. He started OIDA in 1991 and became its full-time presi
dent in 1994. Besides holding 11 patents, he has written numerous papers, c
ontributed a chapter to a book on optoelectronics integration and coauthore
d a book on LEDs. He is a fellow of IEEE.
Milton Chang Is a founder and chairman of New Focus and Focused Research, a
