We report measurements of the vortex-transport entropy in the high-tem
perature superconductor Nd1.85Ce0.15CuO4-delta. The vortex transport e
ntropy, determined from flux-flow Nernst effect and resistivity measur
ements, is about 100 times smaller than Maki's theoretical prediction.
Using a simple microscopic model, we show that the entropy decrease i
s a result of the large energy level spacing between quasiparticle bou
nd states in the vortex core, providing strong evidence for the discre
teness of these states.
