Attention by social work researchers and clinicians to empirically supporte
d treatments is overdue. A distinction is warranted between research-suppor
ted interventions and expert consensus, in favor of the former Social work
researchers can contribute substantially to practice guidelines in the ment
al health arena, particularly in the areas of incorporating context and sam
ple diversity. Caution is in order to prevent rigidity in formulating and a
dopting empirically supported practice guidelines.
