In this paper, an inverse method which starts with assuming a displace
ment function is used to solve structural problems, The displacement f
unction is a non-orthogonal series expansion consisting of trigonometr
ic functions, It is further converted into Fourier series expressed by
Bernoulli or Euler functions. The possibility of satisfying some boun
dary conditions in advance is considered in constructing the displacem
ent function, The rigorous solution is obtained by requiring all funda
mental relations to be satisfied which uniquely determines unknown con
stants in the displacement function, Elasto-static problems are solved
for demonstrating the applicability of the solution procedure, The re
sults are presented. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.
