Abstract
With the opening of the country brought about by the Meiji Restoration
(1868), modern bridge building in Japan commenced with a full assimil
ation of Western technology, With a comparison of bridge-related techn
ologies between Japan and other nations farming a contextual backgroun
d, we examine, in this paper the history of the establishment of bridg
e technologies - or, more specifically, bridge erection technologies -
