C. Hoeffel et al., Pathological fracture in non-ossifying fibroma with histological features simulating aneurysmal bone cyst, EUR RADIOL, 9(4), 1999, pp. 669-671
A 12-year-old-girl presented with a fracture of an osteolytic lesion of the
distal radius. A 7-year-old girl presented with a fracture of an osteolyti
c lesion of the femoral shaft. In both cases it was a nonossifying fibroma
with fracture misdiagnosed at pathology as aneurysmal bone cyst. Fractures
through non-ossifying fibromas may alter the histological pattern the initi
al lesion in two ways: firstly, by the presence of brood pigments due to th
e fracture, and secondly, by formation of new bone. Radiological-pathologic
al correlation is essential to avoid histological errors after pathological
fracture in a nonossifying fibroma.
