The objective of this paper is to investigate the internal structure of eff
ort in the Greek open-sea fishery. For this purpose, a translog effort prod
uction function is applied to survey data collected in 1996. The empirical
results indicate that ample substitution possibilities exist between labour
and capital and labour and energy. In contrast, the substitution possibili
ties between capital and energy are limited. The compensated own-price dema
nd elasticities are lower than one. To further access the internal structur
e of effort, the estimated model has been subject to a barrage of separabil
ity tests (global, linear and nonlinear). In all cases, the assumption of i
nput separability has been decisively rejected. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B
