The time response of an elastic planar beam using exact kinematics of
Reissner [1] is governed by a system of partial differential equations
of the 2nd order with the appertaining boundary and initial condition
s. For an inextensible cantilever beam, the equations reduce into a si
ngle integro-differential equation of the 2nd order. The equation is s
olved numerically. The influence of an exact, i.e. consistent, time-de
pendent mass matrix versus the classical (constant) one is assessed by
a numerical example.
