Investigation of the sphalerite to cinnabar transition for Hg-1 xMnxS (x=0.
02 and 0.07) is presented. The in situ high-pressure-high-temperature X-ray
energy-dispersive experiments were performed using a high-volume X-ray dif
fraction Dress at HASYLAB in the p-T range 0-60 kbar and 17-600 degrees C.
At a given temperature, the transition pressure increases with the manganes
e content in the sample. For x=0.02, the phase transition on uploading occu
rs at 12.5 kbar and for x=0.07 at 24.4 kbar. The present observations are c
onsistent with the literature data obtained at ambient pressure for samples
prepared under a pressure of 18 kbar and quenched to the ambient pressure.
The value of the bulk modulus for Hg0.93Mn0.07S is calculated to be 387.9
