E. Samios et al., PREPARATION, CHARACTERIZATION AND BIODEGRADATION STUDIES ON CELLULOSEACETATES WITH VARYING DEGREES OF SUBSTITUTION, Polymer, 38(12), 1997, pp. 3045-3054
Several samples of cellulose acetate polymers with varying degrees of
substitution (DS) between 0.7 and 1.7 have been prepared and tested fo
r their biodegradation potential. The original and biodegraded polymer
s were characterized using chemical techniques as well as nuclear magn
etic resonance, Fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy, gel permeati
on chromatography, solution viscosity and X-ray diffraction. DS, solub
ility and crystallinity have been investigated as possible factors aff
ecting biodegradability. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.
