Silicon carbide (SiC) whiskers were synthesized from SiO2-CH4-Na(3)AIF(6) s
ystem. The whiskers obtained were cylindrical in shape, and they had unifor
m diameter (0.1-5.0 mu m) and length (50 mu m-10 mm). They were found to ha
ve grown by a Vapor-Liquid-Solid (VLS) mechanism since a catalyst droplet w
as observed on the tip of most of the whiskers. The composition of the AI-S
i droplets was determined by means of EDAX. As no researchers have previous
ly reported on AI-SI droplets, we conducted a detailed analysis of them in
