This paper discusses a model for the genesis and climatology of noctilucent
clouds in the atmosphere of Mars, based on the analogy of the latitude-sea
sonal temperature and humidity distribution of the mesopauses of Mars and t
he earth. The representation of noctilucent clouds as the tracks of the sno
wy cores of minicomets is regarded as a confirmation of the hypothesis of t
he possibility of the presence of water and the existence of life on other
planets of the universe. (C) 1999 The Optical Society of America. [S1070-97
