Substitution of aluminum for nickel in the lattice of nickel hydroxide, pre
pared by co-precipitation, leads to hydrofalcite-like compound of of-nickel
hydroxide. This compound has been used as the electrochemical active mater
ial in the positive electrodes of rechargeable alkaline batteries. Cyclic v
oltammetric studies suggest that or-nickel hydroxide displays better revers
ibility of the Ni(OH)(2)/NiOOH redox couple. The mechanism of the electrode
reaction is still found to be controlled by proton diffusion, and the prot
on diffusion coefficient differs with the content of aluminium. (C) 1999 El
