Raman excitation profiles of several normal vibrations of 2- and 4-benzylpy
ridine were measured and analyzed. On the basis of the results, possible st
ructures and other interesting properties of the two molecules in the excit
ed electronic states are discussed. Normal mode characteristics are also de
scribed. It seems likely that a singlet state, lying in the vacuum ultravio
let region with respect to the ground state, plays a significant role in th
e scattering phenomena. Copyright (C) 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
