We have previously reported a nonaqueous solution route to LiMn2O4 and LiCo
O2 materials that have demonstrated acceptable characteristics for use as l
ithium battery cathode materials. Due to the flexibility of our processes,
complex formulations of cathode materials can be easily generated and studi
ed. Utilizing this flexibility, we have investigated a complex lithium tran
sition metal oxide material, Li-8(Ni5Co2Mn)O-16, far use as an alternative
cathode material. This material was analyzed by X-ray diffraction and scann
ing electron microscopy techniques which indicated it was phase pure. Elect
rochemical investigations revealed a high capacity (similar to 150 mAh/g) w
ith a fade rate of similar to 0.41 mAh/g/cycle (0.27%/cycle). (C) 1999 The
