Possible 4d magnetism of a Rh monolayer in a Cu/Rh/Cu(001) system is invest
igated using the full-potential linearized augmented-plane-wave (FLAPW) ene
rgy band method based on the local-spin-density approximation (LSDA). We ha
ve calculated the total energy of the Cu/Rh/Cu(001) system and have found t
hat the Rh monolayer is ferromagnetic (FM) with a tiny magnetic moment. How
ever, the total energy difference between the ferromagnetic and the paramag
netic states is found to be very small, and thus which state can be realize
d at room temperature is uncertain. The calculated charge densities and lay
er-projected density of states (LDOS) are presented and discussed in relati
on to the magnetic properties.
