Abstract
A zinc(II) complex containing a tetradentate macrocyclic Schiff base ligand L has been synthesized by the template condensation reaction of I,10-phena nthroline-2,9-dicarboxaldehyde phenylhydrazine and 1,2-dibromoethane in DMF . The template condensation in the presence of chromium(III) chloride leads to the formation of the free macrocycle rather than the expected metal com plex. The macrocyclic compounds were characterized by IR, H-1 NMR and elect ronic spectral studies, conductivity and elemental analysis. An octahedral geometry has been suggested for the complex. In order to evaluate the antif ungal activity, the compounds have been screened against four pathogenic fu ngi such as Aspergillus niger, Fusarium solani, Schizosaccharomyces arthros porus and Rhizopus sp. In,general, the zinc(II) complex exhibits much highe r fungitoxic activity than the free ligand.
