Abstract
Inside diffractive structures, the intensity maximum of optical pulses can travel with a velocity exceeding the vacuum speed of light. This effect is due to the occurrence of evanescent waves, and is accompanied by strong att enuation. It is emphasized that, due to the attenuation, causality is not v iolated.
