The B-10(Be-7, B-8)Be-9 reaction has been studied with an 84 MeV Be-7 radio
active tram. The measured cross section determines the asymptotic normaliza
tion coefficients for the virtual transtions Be-7 + p <----> B-8. These coe
fficients specify the amplitude of the tail of the B-8 wave function in the
two-body channel Be-7 + p, and may be used to calculate the S factor for t
he direct capture reaction Be-7(p, gamma)B-8 at solar energies, S-17(0). We
find that S-17(0) = 17.8 +/- 2.8 eV b.
