Abstract
The potential and limitations of scanning tunnelling microscopy for the stu dy of platinum particles deposited on various carbon samples are discussed. Limitations are mainly connected with displacement of metal particles by t he STM tip, difficulty in distinction between different chemical species an d achieving atomic resolution of deposited metal particles.
