Aqueous ammonia has been found to be a good and versatile medium for t
he reductive defluorination of polyfluoroarenes by zinc. Upon the redu
ction of pentafluorobenzoic acid, 2,3,4,5,6-pentafluorobenyl alcohol,
pentafluoropyridine and heptafluoro-2-naphthoic acid individual produc
ts derived from the removal of one fluorine atom have been obtained. (
