Salt and fluid overload play an important role in the pathogenesis of hyper
tension in patients with end-stage renal disease. However, in the individua
l patient, the relation between salt loading and blood pressure response: i
s variable and appears to be influenced by various neurohumoral regulatory
mechanisms. This may also have implications for the pathogenesis of structu
ral cardiovascular abnormalities in patients with endstage renal disease.
