A four-nucleon calculation of the total He-4 photodisintegration cross
section is performed. The full final-state interaction is taken into
account for the first time. This is achieved via the method of the Lor
entz integral transform. Semirealistic NN interactions are employed. D
ifferent from the known partial two-body He-4(gamma, n)He-3 and He-4(g
amma, p)H-3 cross sections our total cross section exhibits a pronounc
ed giant resonance. Thus, in contrast to older (gamma, np) data, we pr
edict quite a strong contribution of the (gamma, np) channel at the gi
ant resonance peak energy.
