The primary role of intensive care in acute head injury lies in the prevent
ion, detection and reversal of secondary neuronal injury. The maintenance o
f optimal systemic and cerebrovascular physiology can substantially contrib
ute to these aims. There is, however, a role for novel neuroprotective inte
rventions, many of which are currently under investigation.
