Abstract
The Native inhabitants of the upper Kobuk River, Alaska, are identified in the ethnographic record as Inupiaq Eskimos. This article presents evidence showing that they were actually Koyukon-speaking Athapaskans in the early n ineteenth century. Between about I86o and I88o they were rapidly and peacef ully assimilated, and they are Inupiaq Eskimos today.
